In another thread Gwyd asked whatever happened to our Pike experiment.
Well - Callen and I attended Tom Leoni's Fabris workshop in the summer. Half of the second day was dedicated to pike. We brought our pike simulators.
They were completely inappropriate for the techniques Tom taught us. To perform those techniques you need a pike, or at least a damn long dowel. Our hybrid of high pressure tubing and dowel and spring loaded dagger blade was next to useless. Too floppy. Too light and unbalanced. We ended up reversing them to inorder to make the business end stiff and allow us to perform and practice the drills.
I don't believe we can create a pike simulator that would both A: faithfully represent a pike, and B: be safe enough for SCA melee. Anything we created that would be safe enough for melee would not be a pike. It would be a long floppy foamy poker. Pass. |

I liked the metal ones, they were fun to fight with.
BTW, from the marshallate end of things, the experiment was killed by the KEM, who basically said no pikes for rapier ever, no matter the construction. The feeling was that heavies get hurt by pikes all the time, and wear armour. We don't wear armour, so we would get hurt even more. Therefor no pikes for rapier in An Tir.
God bless the WMA! We'll have to host some WMA melee's next summer. |

That sucks...damn KEM.
I was really...REALLY looking forward to using a pike in melee...
Let us know Alvarro, I'm interested! |

Hello All,
We did a 'WMA' melee and Tournament at the Gathering event (non-SCA) last year here in the Portland area. We had people doing standard SCA rapier, plus a few doing C&T and one doing longsword. The three styles were considered equal for purposes of the lists with authorization determined by the MIC.
For this year we are considering adding pikes and were looking at these: http://www.alcheminc.com/pike.jpg http://www.alcheminc.com/bucklers.html
I need to pick up a couple and take a look at them. I have a couple of local fencers who do SCA-rapier, TSD and used to do a lot of pike in SCA-heavy.
Anybody used these before?
