I got involved in the SCA in the begining because of a love for history. But part of the history had always been related to rapiers and fencing. Within a year I started to fence within the SCA and enjoy it with a passion. But for me, the SCA is not just a place to go and do the sport of fencing, if that was the case I could easily go to AD in Vancouver which I do from time to time to see my Don and my friends. The SCA is also about the events, the people and the spirit that is involved. If I was unable to continue to do rapier I would still be involved as I also do archery, heraldry and having horses I hope to get more involved in equestrian. I would stay within the folds of rapier and if unable to fight would still be involved in marshalling and teaching. |

| When I first joined the SCA, I was young and I was here mostly for the drinking and debauchery. Then you get a little bored...waiting during the day...waiting for the nightlife to begin. Then at 30 year Guido introduced me to Rapier fighting.
And now...I get to fight with swords....yes....swords!!!
Now I've got sword fighting, drinking and debauchery! |

| You know Godfrey, I am told there are treatment programs for SDD. I can't confirm that however, I have been avoiding treatment myself. |

I understand the failure rate is 100% Geoffery. How does one convince a drunk cavalier with a sword in one hand and an attractive member of the opposite sex on the other arm they need treatment? |

Well....my method is to crack em over the head with whatever is at hand, sell the sword for booze money and walk away with the pretty lady...and remark over my shoulder that the drunkard should "seek treatment" for the split skull.
Works for me.

| That's why I prefer a pretty young lady on each arm (well, one of the reasons). That way, if someone cracks you over the head and steals one, there's another to take care of you! |

Without Rapier, I would stay. Would it change the amount and venues that I play? Hell yea. Being no other venue in besides the SCA, I can't answer the question of a better venue, would I change. Probably not.
I started with the SCA many, many, years ago, and I started for the fighting. That was it. I then explored a little more, and got more involved. Then the rapier comunity started to decline here a little bit, so I started to boycott the baronial practises in favour of practises with my don, what is the use of showing up and being the only two there. The community is on a upswing at the momment and life is good here. Too many left handed fighters though. I just don't know what to do with a right handed fighter. :-)
In conclusion, there are three reasons I go to SCA events, and in order of importance: 1). Stab people in the face. 2). Look pretty 3). Socialize.
If number one dissappears, I still go out to look pretty and socialize.

| I am an SCA member who fences.
I did not join the SCA to fence, but truly enjoy doing so.
I am often not considered serious in the A&S field when people find out that I fence. "Oh, your a fighter..."

I'd have to say that I'm a SCA member who fences. Although I did a little olympic fencing before joining the SCA, and being drawn to the SCA by the fencing, I enjoy much more than just the fencing aspect of it.

Close to 20 years ago, I joined the SCA, having only 'recently' found the thrill of getting a piece of tool steel to steer where I want it to. I have pursued rapier as an art form, to the best of my ability, would be very sad if I could no longer follow that path, but could not give up the SCA, as I have received too much happiness over the years from The Dream.
