Calontir is a rapier free zone. Maybe you want to reconsider that move.

Yup, they are *actively* anti-rapier. Your best hope is that where you're moving is within comfortable driving distance either from The Middle, Ansteorra, or Merides. Otherwise unless you can find a WMA group, put your rapier in mothballs. Dormouse |

There's hope for the future, however. See the archives on the calontir_fence list on YahooGroups. Imagine, for example, a demonstration of cut-and-thrust at the next Lillies War...

Technically, the new kingdom of Gleann Abhann is much closer to Calontir than Meridies proper. Going there would require driving across all of Missouri. Nay, from Iowa, the main option is the Midrealm.

i used to live in Sioux Falls South Dakota, and there was some rapier that went on there. It's like six hours from Des Moines. It is in the new kingdom of Northshield. Not sure what else is closer, but thought i would share my experiences. |

Greetings,
There is a program for those who are interested in rapier, but live in Calontir. Those fencers are called "Falcon Fencers".
Those who wish to fence authorize in any one of the kingdoms in the SCA by their standards (though it is best to authorize in a kingdom that boarders Calontir). These fencers have to be approved by the KRM of the authorizing kingdom and are monitored by the Society Rapier Marshal through reports by said KRMs.
I hope this helps.

You would think that the fact that the bordering kingdoms are autorizing and monitoring rapier fighters that play in that kingdom would be a wake up call to this one lone pain in the ass kingdom that is holding out on rapier for some unknown reason????

Ya know, this malfunctioning quote thingee is really startin' to bug me...
Utgar,
It's really quite simple. Rapier doesn't fit the concept of the SCA held by those in Calontir. In fact, IIRC there are not even many Late Period personas in Calontir.
Also their marshallate does not not feel that steel should be allowed on the field.
And on top of it all, naturally enough, they feel that the interference by outside/bordering kingdoms is buttin' in on their own kingdom's business. Which, in effect, it is.
Unless a grassroots movement there can accomplish a big presence, and more importantly enfluence, the situation is not likely to change.

Calontir is starting to see more development in regards to late period presona's. My tailor currently lives in the kingdom, and is doing his utmost best to help that fashion sense along ;)
BTW - here is a tip regarding the quote function:
Copy the text that you want to quote, hit quote, then replace whatever garbage is in the quote box with the text that you copied.

There is rapier in Calontir, just not officially. I'd guess that about a 1/4 of the groups have a fencing group in or within a reasonable drive from them. It often coincides with the SCA, by having the same people in both, but it is in no way official. It won't be official for several years at least. If you want to practice there that's easy, if you want to compete, either travel out of kingdom or join a WMA group.
And yes, join the yahoo group for Calontir rapier. Introduce yourself and tell them where you'll be moving to. They're good people on that list.
Enjoy.

As I recall my version of SCA history the Kingdom of the West (back when we were a part of it) also went through longish periods of being strongly anti-rapier and very much anti-steel. We had to start off using rattan rapiers then moved onto developing fibreglass blades. It was only after 30th that we introduced schlagers for trial (the musketeer blades I brought back after 25th were a bit of a dead end due to the anti steel brigade)
It took folks in Lochac combined with those in other outlying parts of the West (like Alaska) to keep pushing until we got rapier well established first time in the West. A few good Kings and Queens helped very much in accepting that there was a legitimate and different way of doing combat in the SCA. Of course we had a few infamous reversals due to a jaded view of how royal power should be misused.
However we triumphed in the end and pretty much guaranteed rapier's future (barring something really stupid and bad) by going to the Kingdom of Lochac - which is pretty much rapier friendly (apart from a few sticks in the mud)
I really feel for the rapier folks in Calontir - it is difficult facing bigotry and blind ignorance in any form esp in a culturally diverse organisation such as the SCA - but perseverance can pay off in the long run. Eventually either a new kingdom will form with a more accepting view on rapier or those who are core to the anti rapier culture will die off or become outnumbered.
In the meantime keep your face to the wind and your rapier at the ready.
Should you wish to travel a really long way to practice come on out to Oz - we'd love to have you
