Has abyone never seen a blade trapping problem with a sword? How is that any different? I have seen a blade trapping problem first hand with many swords, so should we disallow them too?

Never saw a fan being used in an SCA event (I'm very new to this game - but I have a long Olympic and Japanese sword art history) although I did discuss the use of it as a passive system with an Atemesia WS and former KRM who stated he would have not problem with their use. They ARE period but not European since the samurai not only used the tessen but developed a separate system much like kenjitsu for it's use.
This site has a full description of secondary weapons used by samurai (the jitte is much like a dagger with curved quillions - convergent evolution) and a fuller desciption of tessen-jitsu can be found in Ratti & Westbrook's Secrets of the Samurai.
BTW, I did see tessen-jitsu used in a demonstration at an All US Kendo Federation Summer camp conducted by a 6th Dan and 7th Dan senseis from Japan. Very effective for getting inside the arc of the katana. Not sure how it would work with a thrusting weapon. |

Alvarro,
If you want to travel all the way to Ramsgaard to test my resolve on an issue such as this. I welcome you and all that you would bring (students, fighters, equipment). While I would prefer it that you came to my fair lands to fight me and my fellow Shire-mates, and not utilize us (Ramsgaard) as a training ground for marshallate issues. I would welcome you regardless.
Its been a while since we fought, and I still call you brother regardless of your new path. Maybe we just need about an hour or so in a field, sparring and arguing *grins*. Yes, that would settle it. Just like old times...

Posted By jgreywolf on 04-04-2006 10:04 PM As to the comments on fans. I have seen firsthand how an open fan has
caused a blade trapping issue during a fight. Have you? The only
reason that I have this bias, is because I have actually seen it
happen. fiberglass in="" tourney="" then="" you="" can="" say="" no="" just="" like="" we="" have="" done="" at="" 12th="" night="" the="" past=""> few years="" so="" yes="" as="" a="" senior="" marshal="" you="" can="" disallow="" something="" like=""> fans, just="" because="" you="" want="" to="" :=""> fans. i="" have="" seen=""> firsthand how="" an="" open=""> fan has="" caused="" blade="" trapping="" issue="" during="" a=""> fight. you="" the="" only="" reason="" that="" this="" bias="" is="" because="" i="" have="" actually="" seen="" it="" happen="">
Dude, really got to figure out the quote issue!
Anyway, trapping.
I was at the thursday night lionsgate practice last night, and saw a tip get wedged in a "v" between the sweeps and the quillons, and the blade nearly took a set from the resulting severe bend. It took the two fighters, co-operating together, a little bit of work to free up the blade.
I would *love* to see that kind of entrapment happen with a fan.
So, following the reasoning being espoused here, I will now ban all sweeps on rapiers in every event I MiC from now on. Only simple cross-hilts or bell-guards will be allowed. Everything else is dangerous. I know, I've seen it.

OK, screw the quote thing.
Draven, you are rather missing the point. Do you think it is *reasonable* to pull my card for fighting with a fan at an event in your area?
If you do, I think you need to really, seriously, sit down and think about why you want to be a senior marshal. Because that is not a reasonable response, and it is NOT in the spirit or letter of the rules. |

Alvarro,
You missed the point on my post. I never said that I would pull anyone's fight card over something like this. In regards to testing my resolve. I would clarify that if you want to travel all the way to Ramsgaard, to see if I will disallow a fan in a tournament that I am running. Then by all means see me hand you back such a secondary to your face and any person that you bring with a similar secondary. My priority as MIC and a Sr. Marshal is to ensure safety and compliance to rules within this Kingdom. This is not a personal issue at all with you.
My status as a Sr. Marshal and reasons why I chose to become one, are not the topic that is being debated in this forum. I'm sure that would make an interesting one for a new topic.

I was at that very event that the fan was presented at. I also agree with disallowing it due to the fact that the sole purpose of a fan was to entrap and bind a blade. Our rules of combat have asked us to stay clear of swept hilts that are designed to trap, bind, bend, or break blades. Why you might ask, it is because they work. That is why you don't see fighters out there with sword breakers. As far as considering a fan as a cloak. Please read the rules on cloaks.
