Anyone know of a reasonably-priced dealer that'll sell me a fairly
light-weight 39" blade? (Just the blade) I've finally come to terms
with the fact that, fun as it is to play with, my 35" blade is
impractical for serious learning. However, anything much heavier
tends to upset my carpul-tunnel. Any suggestions?

Well, the only thing that comes to mind, you may want to acquire a 42" hanwei blade, and have somebody cut it down to 39" for you. 
Pretty sure other people here can post better advice, but that was the first thing I thought of; I've done it once, and I'll say this: use a hacksaw with a blade that can cut high carbon steel, otherwise it'll take...ohh, for the sake of arguement, almost an hour and 3 dull hacksaw blades. Man, that was like, 3 years ago!  |

I recently (like 2 weeks ago) cut back my 43" Hanwei to 40.5" and was very impressed about how it handles. At 43" I found it unwieldy but once it was cut-back a bit it was quite nice. There are also the 40" Triplette/ZWA blades but I've been unimpressed with the 2 I've handled as they don't taper as nicely as the Hanweis (and the Triplettes suffered from poor worksmanship IMHO).
As for cutting it down - I used a Dremel on mine. Took about 5 minutes with the right cutoff wheel while making sure it didn't overheat too much.

| I have a 37" light sparring rapier blade from Hanwei that might be what you are looking for. I will be up in Vancouver Sunday 11/26 to Wed 11/29, if you there is a chance to see if it will work... |

Sorry I missed you - I was running around all weekend and didn't really have any free time.
Is there a maximum amount that can be cut from a 42" blade before it compromises the blade's integrity? Or can I just take a dremel and chop of the end? I think I'll probably cut downa Hanwei - it sounds easiest.

As I understand it, as long as the blade still passes the flexibility test, you're OK. One way to be sure ahead of time is to hang the 2 oz. weight from the point where you want to cut the blade and see if it flexes enough to pass. If so, then cut away! If not, make sure you really got a Hanwei, because Hanweis usually pass the test with room to spare, and 3" shouldn't make that much difference.

As long as it's the Hanweii blade that comes with the swept hilt cas iberia guard, cutting it back to 39 inches should not be an issue. You can buy the whole kit from Warriors and Wonders and I'd be happy to cut it down for you.
I spoke with Justin the other day and he was holding off on the drive up to see what the weather might do. I don't know if he made it up, but if he did he said he would try and make it to our practice, Rebeca. The 37 is a pretty good entry level blade, and I can always set you up with a forward mount ricasso or you can get a triplette double clam guard that forward mounts the blade. Either option would put you very close to 39 inches. But you might like the 37 as is.

ugh. Personally, I absolutely loathe those blades with the "forward" mount ricasso. Blah.
FYI - I made it to the border yesterday, but they would not let me into Canada. Then after getting back onto I-5 I ended up spinning off the road into a ditch, where I sat for a little over 4 hours. I might come back up next week though. |

Would I be able to mount the hanwei blade in the guard I have
now? The guard is actually designed for a larger blade than
I'm using, so I didn't think it would be a problem.

If you mean that horrible homemade guard you use with your schlager, no - you won't be able to mount a Hanwei on that. If you have a guard that will mount a blade larger than a schlager then yes it should work - bring the guard Thursday and we can try it with one of the Hanweis that are always at class. If the guard is a bit small I can probably make it work. I dropped a double wide into a cas iberia swept hilt with a minimum of swearing and a high speed drill.
