Hello All,

The Shire of Coeur is once again hosting the rapier themed event True Arte of Defence.
This event will take place June 22nd - 24th at a park in Albany with a really cool boat playground structure.

More information and links as they become available.

The rapier activities will feature one Tourney and three Melee scenarios themed after the Venetian Gang fighting called "Battagliole sui Ponti" (Little Battles on the Bridges) -- thanks to Don Luciano for the inspiration and technical advise.

Tentatively we will also have classes covering:
I.33, SCA C&T, Historical Hilts and How to Build them, plus a few more.

Thanks,

-- Monseigneur Chrestien de Valois

Here is a tentative schedule (still waiting to hear from the Autocrat):

Schedule:
9:00-9:45am: Lists open, Armour Inspection, Warm-ups
“Authorization Clinic, pt. 1” by Don Luciano Foscari
9:45am: Lists Close
10:00am: Calladum Tourney. Double Elimination. All weapon styles except Case.
11:00am-12:00pm: Classes
     “I.33” taught by Sir Rustam
“Modern Fencing Drills for SCA Rapier” by Maestro James V. Ciaramitaro, M.Ed.
“Intro to SCA Cut and Thrust” by Monseigneur Chrestien de Valois
“Historical Rapier Hilts and How to Build Them” by Armand Chavez de Castille
“Authorization Clinic, pt. 2” by Don Luciano Foscari
12:00-12:30pm: Lunch
12:30-1:00pm: Melee Lists open, Capi picked, teams divided.
1:00pm: Melee Scenarios
Battagliole sui Ponti -- “Little Battles on the Bridges”

Mostre: (Tourney) The Capi decide between them who goes first (rock, paper, scissors). The winning Capi sends one fighter out onto the narrow bridge. The other Capi sends out one of their fighters. Combat ensues. One point is awarded for each wound caused and one point for victory. A ‘kill’ is not a ‘wound’ but is still a win. So, a quick kill gets one point (and a round of booing from the offended side); while taking arm, leg, arm gets four points; double kills get zero points and a round of booing from all participants. All weapon combinations allowed, except for Case and RBGs.

Scaramuccie: (Melee Skirmishes) A maze will be built with flags for the defenders indicating where defenders may be placed (number dependent on total number of combatants). Defenders must stay in the area of their flag. One faction is going through the maze; the other is defending it; switch and repeat – best time wins. All weapon combinations allowed, except for Case and RBGs.

Frotte: (Grand Melee). Sword and Buckler, Sword and Baton or Single Sword; fought on a wide bridge. Timed melee, report Wounds and Deaths to lists. You may step off the bridge at any time to go recover Wounds. Note that losing both arms counts as two Wounds (or three, if the legs are gone too) not a Death.

Fighters interested in authorization as a rapier fighter, or a rapier junior marshal are invited to come to the rapier authorization clinic at True Arte. In addition to the regular classes, there will be two classes going over the rules, blow calling, and other things SCA rapier fighting oriented on Saturday. Additionally on Saturday there will be an open practice time, so that we can see where you are and make any suggestions for things that need work. Finally, on Sunday morning, there will be a written and practical test. Candidates that successfully pass both tests will be authorized as a rapier fighter and/or a junior rapier marshal.

Fighters, and marshal, candidates are expected to have read, and understand, the latest version of the rapier rules(http://www.nwrapier.com/SCAResources/CombatRules/tabid/136/Default.aspx) before the weekend. Fighter candidates are to have rapier fighting experience as well. Fighters will be expected to be able to safely fight with single rapier, rapier and dagger, rapier and cloak, rapier and shield, and rapier and baton. Case of rapier will not be covered this weekend.

This clinic is not intended to take someone who has never fought before and authorize them. If you are interested in learning to rapier fight, please come and take the classes, but you will not be eligible for authorization at the end of the weekend as a fighter. We can then determine if there is someone local to you who can continue your education, or possible make arrangements for me to come teach if there isn't anyone near by.

Any junior marshal interested in becoming a senior rapier marshal will need to contact me before the weekend so that we can discuss where you are, and then show up for the weekend and work with me, and the other senior marshals, over the weekend.

Any questions or concerns can be directed to me at lucianofoscari@hotmail.com.
