Next Sunday, October 29th, the Aquaterra rapier community will be holding a Pas d’Arms phoenix tourney at our regular practice time and location, 1pm at Emerson Elementary School. *Please note that this is when Daylight Savings Time ends, so if you show up and no one is there, you’re an hour early. ☺ * A Pas d’ Arms tournament is a formalized type of late medieval tournament, whose main goal is to encourage the expression of chivalry. A pas provides the opportunity for fighters to exemplify the best of the history of the middle ages and its modern romantic interpretation. A pas is a challenge tournament, and fighting is for the joy of combat, never for a prize or title. At a pas, fighters are divided between defenders and challengers. The defenders defend a place or an ideal, while the challengers make challenges of them. Garb, banners, and heraldry play a very important role in the pas, as the overall appearance of the event is crucial. A gallery of spectators views the tournament and makes suggestions for combat. They may choose to award tokens of appreciation to combatants whom they find especially admirable. This Pas d’Arms will be a phoenix tourney, open to all rapier combatants, carded or uncarded. We also encourage anyone wishing to gain marshaling experience to participate. Fighters should have an inspiration (they need not be present) and some type of heraldry or banner (a generic marker will be provided for those without a personal banner). They should have a written introduction for the herald to read at the opening of the lists: be creative and flowery! We ask that fighters wear their best garb, as this is an opportunity to display the best of rapier. We also ask that the gallery come in garb. There will be three total rounds of fighting: First Pass - Defender chooses the number of blows given (1,3,5), Challenger chooses weapon format Second Pass - Defenders accept challenges from Challengers, Challengers choose weapon format Third Pass - Defenders accept challenges from Challengers, Gallery chooses weapon format Weapon Formats allowed will be Single Sword, Sword and Dagger, Sword and Buckler, and Sword and Baton Thank you for your support of the rapier community, and I hope to see many of you next Sunday! Much fun was had, Thanks to Don Eagle for setting this up and running things.

I very much enjoyed the variation to the normal phoenix tourny, and this gave us the opportunity to evaluate the newer fighters very well under alot of different conditions.
