It's been quiet for too long... 
What are your favorite sword related movies? I've always liked The Three/Four Musketeers from the mid 70's. |

Agreed on that! The swordplay in those two films is probably some of the best ever to be put in a movie!
The duel at the end of Valmont (or was it Dangerous Liaisons? same story, different cast) was interesting - the kid was using Destreza!
The duel in the Helena Bonham Carter version of Twelfth Night was suitably funny.
Anything with fight direction by William Hobbs, including:
- The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers
- Ladyhawke
- Willow
- The Crimson Permanent Assurance
- Hamlet (Mel Gibson version)
- Dangerous Liaisons
- The Duellists
- Robin and Marion
- The Count of Monte Cristo (recent version)
The Mask of Zorro - swordplay as foreplay. Nuff said.
Swordplay in Brannagh's Shakespeare films is pretty good, too.
Always loved the fight scene in Polanski's MacBeth (another Hobbs job).
For sheer, flashy fun, any of the old '30s and '40s swashbucklers, especially if Fred Cavens was involved (which he usually was). Cavens may not have known much historical swordplay, but with his fiery, classical fencing based choreography, you just don't care if it's anachronistic!
The Princess Bride. The duel on the Cliffs of Insanity is trash, but it's fun trash. Less trashy and just as entertaining is Inigo's swordplay at the end of the film.
Spartacus. I still get chills remembering the first time I saw those legions come over the hill on the big screen. To see this movie on a screen smaller than 20 feet wide is a crime.
Star Wars movies. In the realm of swordplay, the three prequels are actually much better than the original three. Yoda is badass! However, I still wonder about why Jedi and Sith adhere to edge orientations when a light saber can cut in any direction...
The Pirates of the Carribean movies are more trashy fun. The wedding in the last one was the high point of the film for me. Between it and the Peter Pan homage in the fight between Jack and Davie, I could almost forgive the idiocy of the ship-to-ship combat.

| Although it's not the main drive of the film, the swordplay in Cyrano de Bergerac is all kinds of fun, especially for the poet at heart.
The Duelists (Ridley Scott director) is my fav, followed closely by the Three Musketeers already mentioned. |

Also for fun look at is Ring of Steel - while definitely not an award winner the sword and dagger vs katana fight scene was interesting.
And Rob Roy - Rapier vs basket hilt. The old arguement of which is better, lots of thrusts or one good cut.
Other then that you've hit most of my favorites already. I'll add in (god forbid) the Gene Kelly version of the 3 musketeers, when can dance and sword fight together its just fun. |

Yeah, that was a good version.  I recall reading that either Gene Kelly or Danny Kaye (probably Danny Kaye) had such a habit of improvising during fencing scenes that Fred Cavens forbade anyone but himself to do a fencing scene with him. So if you watch "The Court Jester," the fight director is the guy fighting against the hero.
Ah, for the golden age of swashbuckler movies, when actors actually had some fencing skills to begin with! Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, Tony Bennett... Yes, I said Tony Bennett. Check him out in "The Great Race." |

I have always been a big fan of the older movies.
My most favourite is Captain Blood.
I also love the 3 & 4 Musketeers from the 70s.
Not as commonly known or liked are the two squels that came after that.
La Femme Musketeer & Revenge of the Musketeer.
Princess Bride is right up there as well.
As is the Man in the Iron Mask. Some great lines.
A lot of fav movies have already been covered off in above posts.
I also like On Guard
There are many others to mention, but its late and I need to get some sleep. |

Is "La Femme Musketeer" the same as "D'Artagnan's Daughter" with Sophie Deneuve? If so, that's a fun one, if a bit strange. Good costuming, interesting um... adaptation of "20 Years After," lots of eye candy (mostly in the form of the aforementioned Sophie), muchos humor, and some of the most bizarre fight choreography I've ever seen! Every fight starts with good form as the oppenents engage, then everything goes to hell for awhile as they do flash/trash stuff and leave mile-wide openings that are never exploited, and then the good guy suddenly rolls into fourth or second and executes a perfect single-time riposte - end of fight. I've come to believe that it's part of the humor of the film. Not really a sequel to the 3/4 Musketeers, but worth checking out.
Haven't seen "Revenge of the Musketeers," although I've been looking for a copy forever. It's a true sequel to the 70s movies, with the same director, cast, fight direction, etc. Based again on "Twenty Years After." Sadly, the fellow who played Planchet died as the result of a riding accident during the shoot. |

That's Sophie Marceau, and the film title is "Revenge of the Musketeers" - at least that's what all my copies say. And although the acting is poor, the swordplay poor, and the story poor, I find myself recommending it. The title in French wasn't "Revenge of the Musketeers" but the English rebranded copies use that title.

Ah. Been too long since I've seen it. At least I got the "Sophie" part right. Yep - same movie. It was released with different titles for different markets. Maybe the Lester-directed sequel was "Return of the Musketeers." Revenge, Return, Son/Daughter of... It gets confusing.
Heh. "Return of Revenge of Son of the Musketeers from Hell in 3D: Apocolypse!" That's a movie for you. Somebody should make it so we can all be really, really scared of it.
Edited addition:
I just consulted IMDB.com, and "La Femme Musketeer" is NOT the same as "Revenge of the Musketeers/D'Artagnan's Daughter." It also features Michael York as D'Artagnan, but everyone else is different. I might have to look for that one. Thanks, Molly! |

| The fight choreography can't be any stranger than "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Musketeer", I mean "The Musketeer"... It lost me when the main character stuck his rapier into a beam and pulled himself into the rafters with it. |
