It's been said many times that WS are unapproachable. But who is the most unapproachable? Which one of us gets the dubious honor?
I think it has to be me. I've no cadets, I've only been approached about becoming a cadet twice, and I've only been approached twice to sponsor someone into a cadet tournament, both times by people I knew. No one wants to come talk with me. Boo hoo hoo.
Who do you think is the most unapproachable?

Hmmm...I almost want to say Guido, but he has enough cadets to field a football team, so he is out of the running.
All whitescarves are approachable, it is just a matter of bringing the right alcohol along.

Pish tosh!
I'm the most unapproachable, after all, I'm evil and elitist... Not to mention exclusionary! And most importantly, I'm not at any events, so that makes me real unapproachable... ;-)
Vent:
Ya know I'm really sick of this the OWS is unapproachable cop-out, crap. I've heard this crap for 20 years, or more, and it's really startin' to get old.
We're humans (At least most of us anyway...) and very rarely engage in canabalism...
If someone can't get up the cajones to talk to me, or any other WS for that matter, then they need to find a way to cowboy up and get it done. That is, if they want to my cadet, or get sponsored. The worst I can say is no, and if you have that much problem with rejection then you need to rethink your goals.
When I first approached my Don, I was turned down. I just kept after him until he agreed that I needed to be his cadet , if for no other reason than to keep me from buggin' him about it.
I am who I am, and I'm not gonna do anything to make myself "more approachable". Ya'll are stuck with me the way I am. I've been this way for 45 years (Almost...) and I'm not likely to change now.
Vent over...

And here I've always been told that you're unapproachable because you're a God! (yeah, yeah, just kidding)
Are we talking here about the same faulty perceptions as the peerages being "unapproachable?" Is it a matter of people not feeling like they can talk to the OWS at all? Or are we talking about approaching a Don or Dona and starting a discussion about becoming a cadet? This same topic (approachability) has been bandied about who knows how many lists over the past few months, with no "resolutions" being reached in any of these discussions. It seems to be to be a matter of perception. If Josie Newbie Fighter sees two or three members of the OWS talking together, does she not approach because (a) she doesn't want to interrupt the conversation; (b) she does not feel worthy of their notice; or (c) does not feel comfortable with approaching folks to whom she has not been introduced? The "solutions" to each of these (and many other) scenarios will, of course, vary, but it all comes down to understanding that, as Mouse says, the OWS are (mostly) human, and they all put their pants on one leg at a time, just like the rest of us.
Just for the record, I can remember a time when I was a bit "star-struck" by members of the OWS, but that was also the time when I still closed my eyes and flinched (very visibly) every time a shot came my way. It's not surprising that the "wow" factor sets in, what with all of the pretty clothes and stellar fighting that we see from our OWS on a regular basis. But, after getting to know a few folks, I quickly learned that many of the OWS WANT folks to come over and say hi and have a little chat--as long as you're not getting in the way of them watching a potential candidate on the field or something like that. It just takes a little common sense...after all, I myself most likely am not going to engage in deep conversation if I'm watching a tournament, which seems to be the time when folks tend to try to "talk to" Dons and Donas. Try talking to them during Court...I've found that they'd much rather have a friendly chat than sit around in the hot sun watching endless hours of court court court (*grins*).

Gemma, I'm sure I taught Simone a thing or two about aloofness, not the other way around.
Mouse, two de-merits for taking something that was supposed to be fun and making it serious. No Shiner Bock for you.
Luaithrenn, You should know better then to follow Dormouse, that always leads to trouble.
How come it's just WS, and Simon, playing along? Surely someone else wants to join in in the fun.

Affectionately referred to as Core? Maybe we've been talking to different people, but 'affectionately' would definitely not be my adjective of choice.
As to the civilised comment, the whole discussion was going swimmingly until Sebastien mentioned 'distance' in the same sentence as Raoul, which always sets him off. Course, I've been kinda trained the hard way to recognize his triggers, so you can be forgiven for mentioning it.
And Raoul is far from unapproachable. Just ask the entire fields he's sponsored in the past for Cadet's tournies (cadetted by Raoul, sponsored by Raoul, sponsored by Raoul... all the way around the circle). I only wonder how he didn't end up with a lifetime supply of rum when repeatedly bargaining from a position of strength like that. |

Luciano: Bite me! I don't think you'd survive tryin' to keep Shiner Bock from me. Besides I started out fun.. This topic just struck a nerve.
And while we're at it two de-merits for you for forgettin' to put Luaithrenn in the count. It s/b anyone other than WS, Simon *and* Luaithrenn... Luaithrenn: Pay no attention to Luciano, he's insignificant anyways... Just remember I'm older and wiser than he is.
John: You don't count... Unless this included the outside An Tir area. Ruling from the judges please??

True, I did miss Luaithrenn comment on you being a god. I don't think my mind could handle the ramifications of that thought and just glossed over it. You're at least older... Wiser, I think the jury is still out on that one. You did willingly let me teach you single-stick.
As for including those outside of An Tir, sure why not, everyone can play along at home.
Oh wait a minute, that wasn't very unapproachable of me, allowing others to play. I'll go off and do 50 Hail Thore's as punishment. Hail Thore, full of arrogance, his sword is in me. Blessed art thou amongst the plebes. |

hmm...call me dellusional off the pizza and beer, but here's my theory.
White scarves...well, their wearers, are like the Alumni, or however that's spelled, in that they're all a bit "off". By day, they're the average joe, pondering on such engrossing topics as "Which scotch to drink today?" or "who's ass will I kick next?" and over such matters as, "Which cadet needs a good @$$ kicking today?!" *cough* Simon. *cough*
By night they revert to their lizard man state that reveals too us that they are, indeed, from the planet bok, and enjoy the simple things...scotch....beer....cider....woman...though they prefer woman mainly with a little salt and a good seasoning.
The scarf itself is, indeed an antenna through which they use as a form of mind control, installing fear into the brains of all those that are around them. The normal (mostly normal from a mile away) shiver and cower in fear, diving behind every rock, hill or the nearest meat pile, and are usually found screaming in Rapienglispanitalianiese, "PLEASE HAVE MERCY, FOR THE LOVE OF CATFISH!!!!, DON"T KILL ME!"
But this is all just popular trife, so don't quote me or nothin (For fear that it may become garbled, illegible and jammed full of equal signs) |

Geez...a little warning would be nice if you are going to post something that hilarious. I nearly sprayed my monitor with Orange Juice.
The real trick to being unapproachable is actually quite simple...just choose an SCA name that is also a modern name...then when someone calls it out, conveniently ignore it, using the logic that if they really wanted to talk to you they would use your real name...then if they use your real name, ignore it to, because if they were in the proper SCA mindset they would use your SCA name. :-)

Nah, it's all in the name that no one can pronounce.
While they're busy stumbling over it trying to challenge you for something awful you did, you wander off and go offend someone else. That, or pretend to be offended by the fact that they can't pronounce your name, then challenge them to duel before they can stammer out something resembling your name. |
