Does anybody know or have any information about how it's done?  I want to try it on the next guard I build when I've got the time (new blade, new guard; what can I say?)

Any and all info will be mucho-appreciatus.

I know that cold bluing is just brushed on. Your local gun shop should have some, I think it is made by Birchwood Casey. I have seen a few examples and it doesn't look too bad.

I used gun bluing on my helmet. It was pretty easy to use IIRC. It was Birchwood Casey.

Again, a gun shop or if you have one a black powder shop will definitely have it. Very easy to use.

Word of advice, don't use it on a gorget and then leave the gorget in the sun. That was one nasty burn :-)

Hey thanks guys; now I just have to like, clean most of the machining marks off the guard and go out and find a kit.  Here's a question; is gun blueing more similar to wood stains in that it'll make grind/rough grit sanding marks more apparent, or is it more like paint in that it'll make them less obvious?

I so need to invest in a tig machine

hmmm...I am not sure, but I would guess more like a stain than a paint.

Ah, okay; thanks! I was talking to a guy at work about it and he suggested using the gel variety; I'll try and pick up some this weekend, and give it a try.

Well, that wasn't as hard as I thought it would be; it was actually one of the coolest things I've seen; the stuff reacted in seconds.

and after; this is only two coats of the stuff! I ended up using gunslick brand; nothing fancy, but it did the job!
