I was told tonight by our junior marshal that Blade Grasping is now "officially illegal". Someone else mentioned that this was decided at Quad War and we are just waiting for the paper work to update the printed rules... I seem to be outta touch, but I haven't seen anything mentioned hear which I find odd. Anyone have more info on this?

That is correct.
As of the latest Crier, blade grasping has been removed from the rules.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions on it.

2 steps forward 1 step back.
Why the change?

Well, I think Ramon makes it pretty clear in The Crier why the change, "Blade Grasping as an allowable technique has been removed. This has been removed due to a large amount of confusion across the Kingdom on how blade grasping can actually be performed, what it means, etc. Not to mention a couple of instances where interpretations were being taken to ridiculous extremes."

Can't that be said about any part of Rapier when dealing with the SCA?

I can't say that I'm sorry to see it go, really.  To me, allowing for blade grasping but not allowing the obvious counters to it was a lot like telling someone they are allowed to attack but they can't parry.

Amen, for reasons I've beaten to death before. Call me Cassandra.

Very true. The problem, of course, is that the obvious counters include:

(a) cut the hand as your opponent attempts the grasp
(b) once grasped, let go of your sword and close to grapple
(c) invite the grasp and then sincture in time

Of these, (a) and (b) are difficult to do safely unless you have far more training than the newly-frocked fencer can reasonably be expected to have. While (c) is not really dangerous, it also lives relatively far along the learning curve and thus would not be available to beginners. So even if these were allowed, they would only frustrate or actively endanger a large number of folks.

A and C are both legal. B is illegal by our rules. Though the other obvious counter is to grab or check your opponents blade/hilt.

Cutting the hand isn't that dangerous... and if you stick it out there and complain your knuckles got rapped your just a pissy whiner. I see people try to hand parry and get their hands cut all the time.

And yes C is difficult, but so are a lot of other things. That's why it's an art form. If you can't do it and you need to, why then you have a reason to learn.
